Organize a Costume Swap
Ghosts and goblins aren't the only scary part of Halloween. From pricey superhero and fairy-princess costumes to giant inflatable pumpkins and monsters, the costs of this once-humble holiday can really add up. Fortunately, Sara Noel, a syndicated columnist and creator of FrugalVillage.com, says it's easy to have some good, scary fun without spending too much loot.

Turn last year's Princess Leia costume into this year's Hannah Montana ensemble by bringing friends and neighbors together for a costume exchange. "Try to encourage an exchange through your kids' school, so that you'll be swapping with a larger pool," says Noel. Costumes should be clean, on hangers and clearly labeled with the size.
