Can you recommend some arthritis medications that are effective for diabetic pets?
Dr. Messonnier says: First, if the diabetes is well controlled, the NSAID Rimadyl shouldn't hurt the liver. However, I prefer to rely on supplements rather than Rimadyl for long-term control, using NSAIDS on an as-needed basis.
There are many supplements you can try: MSM, CM, glucosamine, etc. If you use glucosamine, just keep an eye on his glucose so we don't raise it any more. See my book, The Arthritis Solution for Dogs for more information on supplements.
Finally, I would rather keep him skinny and not worry about weight gain. Weight reduction is really important for arthritic pets because it eases the stress on their joints.
Good Luck!
