With pets increasingly treated like children and valued family members, selecting a veterinarian is not to be taken lightly. In fact, for many families, this decision is just as important as selecting a pediatrician for the children. Because a veterinarian oversees all of your pet's health care needs throughout its life, make sure you choose the right veterinarian by using the following guidelines recommended by the American Animal Hospital Association.

One of the best ways to research veterinarians and veterinary hospitals is to get recommendations from family, friends and neighbors. Once you have a few referrals, you are ready to begin more detailed research. It is important to make sure your veterinarians will meet your expectations and that you and your pet feel comfortable around the doctor. You also should feel at ease when talking with your veterinarian about treatment options and payment plans.

"Even if the doctor is extremely qualified, if you don't connect on certain issues regarding your pet's health care, you may need to continue your search," says Dr. Michael Paul, AAHA president.
