Should I board my cats in a kennel at my vet's clinic when I travel?

Feline behaviorist Pam Johnson-Bennett says:
Cage depression is a real condition in boarding cats. Is there any chance that one of your relatives or friends could pet-sit for you while you're gone? If someone would be willing to stay at your home that would obviously be the best for your cats. But I understand that it may not be possible, if for instance one of your cats has a medical condition. So if you have to board them, the vet clinic is the best place because your cat will be certainly get the medical attention needed.

Ask some of the technicians whether they would take the cats out for regular play sessions. Bring a few interactive fishing-pole toys and ask them whether they'd let your kitties exercise a little every day. Along with being petted and held, the daily playtime will do a lot toward preventing cage depression.

My heart goes out to you because I know you'll be worried about your cats while you're out of town. But if you trust your veterinarian and get a good feeling from his or her staff, then you can count on the fact that they'll do everything possible to help your cats through this.
