Although raspberries may be expensive in the supermarket, they are a snap to grow in your own back yard and will leave you with heavenly desserts all summer long. They are especially easy to grow if you only have a limited space, a container or a small nook.

Summer-bearers
Just like the strawberry, summer bearing raspberries produce their fruit only in the summer. While summer-bearing raspberries are quite a treat, most experts will say that planting summer-bearers, such as Latham and Heritage, is not exactly fruitful (excuse the pun).

Unless you have some space for this summer favorite to really spread out, for most of the year (when the plant is not bearing fruit), it's not attractive, needs much support and netting protection against birds.

Everbearers
Everbearers, as opposed to summer-bearers, produce fruit for at least three more months. You will find that a crop of everbearers will produce berries from August to October. If you are a raspberry lover that enjoys preserving the fruit and eating it fresh, one good idea is to plant both types of raspberries.
