Healthy soil equals healthy grass
Everything that your lawn needs to survive (besides air and sunlight) depends on its soil. And a good soil will make room for water, air, nutrients and roots to move through it with ease.

It is also important to annually add a thin layer (about 1/4 inch) of finely screening organic matter -- to enhance soil life.

What makes a healthy soil?
Healthy soil should have the ability to hold water like a sponge but at the same time promote excess drainage.

If you're preparing a new lawn
Incorporate two to three inches of compost or other organic matter into the soil and till to a depth of six to eight inches. Level the area with rake and roll. Under any new lawn it is important to establish a basis of soil fertility. Add an organic lawn starter at a rate of 25 pounds per 1,000 feet. Rake in lightly to a depth of one to two inches.
