Herbs, especially those that thrive in the dry soils of the Mediterranean, do especially well in pots or raised beds. step 1

Project art Prepare for planting. You can use any size container for your garden. We've selected a rounded terra-cotta pot with a large drain hole. Make sure your pot has adequate drainage, because most herbs are from hot, dry locations and don't take kindly to wet feet. Place a pot shard or rock over the hole to stop soil from washing out after watering.

step2

Add soil. Fill the container with soil. Use a good-quality potting soil, made especially for containers. These soil mixes are formulated to have water-holding components, such as sphagnum peat moss, that will help your herbs from drying out in the container.
