Using soil additives, such as a pelleted slow-release fertilizer and a wetting agent, will improve flower performance and reduce maintenance tasks. Add these things to the soilless mix before planting. You can make your additions one pot at time or make a larger batch of "doctored up" soil for several containers.

Look for fertilizers that release nutrients based on soil temperature, not moisture. Wetting agents hold moisture in the soil, reducing the time between waterings. A relatively new product, Hydretain, is watered into soil after planting. In hot climates, mix a traditional water-absorbing material into soil, then give plants a drink of Hydretain after planting. This one-two punch will lengthen time between waterings -- and improve the looks of your blooming beauties.
