Using soil additives, such as a pelleted slow-release fertilizer and a wetting agent, will improve flower performance and reduce maintenance tasks. Add these things to the soilless mix before planting. You can make your additions one pot at time or make a larger batch of "doctored up" soil for several containers.![]()

Look for fertilizers that release nutrients based on soil temperature, not moisture. Wetting agents hold moisture in the soil, reducing the time between waterings. A relatively new product, Hydretain, is watered into soil after planting. In hot climates, mix a traditional water-absorbing material into soil, then give plants a drink of Hydretain after planting. This one-two punch will lengthen time between waterings -- and improve the looks of your blooming beauties.![]()
