Simply repainting kitchen cabinets can make a world of difference. You can also transform flat doors into Shaker style by adding a simple frame made from MDF (fiberboard). Add the molding, then paint with cupboard makeover paint ‑- using a brush for that "handmade kitchen" look.
Getting Started
Time taken: 1 day at least
You will need:
- 1/4 inch MDF (fiberboard), cut to size
- Panel pins
- Wood filler
- Fine-grade sandpaper
- 2 quarts cupboard makeover, melamine or multi-surface paint ‑- choose one that will cover without primer
Tools:
- Screwdriver
- Tape measure
- Small hammer
- Nail punch
- Filler knife or scraper
- 2-inch paintbrush
Step One
Remove each door from its cupboard using a screwdriver and then remove the handle. Measure very precisely for the MDF (fiberboard) panels. The two panels on either side run from top to bottom and the other two from side to side between the two side panels. Take the panels to be cut to size professionally, as unless you are an expert it is just too difficult to cut them as precisely as you need in order to achieve an excellent finish. Attach the panels to the front of the cupboard door with panel pins and a small hammer.
