- For the Young Cowboy
"My son's new room has a cowboy theme, and I've been having a great time finding stuff to put in it. The bedspread is denim ($49.99 at Wal-Mart), and the sheets are a fun cow print that I bought years ago. I've made a pile of toss cushions out of old denim shirts and bandannas. His curtains are buffalo plaid -- very simple lined panels on a black iron rod."My latest project is painting a white lampshade with cow spots to go with his black iron lamp. I'm planning to make hooks out of scavenged tree branches to display a cowboy hat, a hobby horse and my son's jean jacket. I've also photocopied some pictures out of an old Western picture book and will have my mom make frames for them."

"I used plaid wallpaper (under the chair rail) in my son's nursery. The plaids are dark green, navy blue, and cranberry -- those deep colors. We painted the chair rail navy blue, and above it we put an old-time baseball border. It is neat looking. I painted the walls a light blue. We then put up pennants on one wall."

Some ideas: a comforter or duvet cover in a classic baseball uniform pinstripes; throw pillows made from T-shirts featuring your favorite team logos -- an easy sewing project; old-fashioned felt pennants on the wall; a curtain rod with tennis or baseball finials; used sports equipment, such as a tennis racket or baseball bat, displayed on the wall; a shelf displaying a baseball mitt, a few balls, and an old sports trophy or two; framed vintage team photos; a collage of sports trading cards and ticket stubs; and my favorite, a small basketball net mounted over a laundry hamper (it might just give your son the motivation to pick up his stuff). Check flea markets, garage sales, junk shops and even eBay. You might find some cool stuff."
