BAMBOO: Bamboo shades give a global look to travel worn walls. Cut them to fit and staple gun them to the wall. Available at most import stores starting at $12.
CHICKEN WIRE: Hide knick-knacks, books, and stereo equipment behind chicken wire or wire mesh cabinet doors from the hardware store. Just staple gun the wire or mesh to replace the old glass in cabinet doors. Or, staple it to the back of pre-made screen doors or window frames you can attach with hinges to the front of your bookcase.
