I have a very tight budget but I want a clean, peaceful, sanctuary-like feeling in my bedroom. I'm also looking for a worldly touch, inspired by Morocco or India, because I know I cannot travel any time soon. Can you help? --Sonia
You can easily create a clean, peaceful and exotic bedroom style by following these tips:
- Use fabric to create movement, to create the feeling of being in a seaside bungalow in Bali. Pick up some lightweight, draping fabrics at the fabric store, such as rayons, silks and lightweight cottons. If it is a clean look you prefer, stick with whites and accent with other colors. If drama is what you'd like, bring in some rich, bright colors, such as orange, turquoise and deep red. (You may be able to find some vintage saris in these colors, for example.) The fabric can be hung over windows or draped over the bed.
- Shop at import stores for exotic accessories. Be on the lookout for materials you may not normally use, such as bamboo, dark woods and stone.
- Introduce some tropical plants into your bedroom
-- real or artificial. A few palms here and some bright flowers there can make a world of difference.
- Don't ignore your nonvisual senses. Add a small fountain for a peaceful, relaxing feeling that extends from sight to sound.
- Frame a few photographs of those places you dream of traveling to in the future. Being surrounded by the images may make you feel like you are there. You don't have to spend money on expensive artwork
-- just carefully tear out pictures from travel magazines or frame a few postcards.
